Orientation to police officials
Bipana Paneru/Kaski (Pahichan) April 18 – Information regarding gender and sexual minority has been provided to the police officials in the Kaski district. An orientation program was organized to inform police about the various aspects of this community. There was the participation of more than 30 police officials of various ranks.
The program was jointly organized by Global Fund, Save the Children and Blue Diamond Society. The aim of the program is to make a cordial relation between police administration and members of this community.
According to Manisha Dhakal, Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society, said the program was organized to enhance the capacity of police and make a gender-friendly environment.
The training will help to minimize the abusive behavior by police officials against this community. Bhumika Shrestha, a transgender rights activist, informed about various aspects of gender identity. Shrestha said though there is gradual improvement, there is a need of further correction.
Surya Bahadur Deuja, Regional Director of National Human Rights Commission urged the political administration to maintain caution to the crime, discrimination and abuse of this community. He said police should not discriminate the members of this community.
He said NHRC is raising the voices of this community in the international-level. Shiva Khakurel, INSEC regional representative said society and nation is still not positive about this community.
He said constitutional provisions should be implemented without any delay. Police Officer Thaneshwor Chapagain said such orientation would help to increase the knowledge about this community and behave accordingly. He said police would conduct friendly behavior to this community.
Transgender Bindhiya Gautam Purush Raj Chhetri said there is gradual change in the perception of society towards this community. According to them, there is still need behavior towards this community by police official. Blue Diamond Society has announced to conduct such orientation across the country to impart objective information about this community.
