Sex is not sole profession of gender and sexual minority

Kathmandu (Pahichan) January 6 – “Sex is not our primary profession. Because, it has been banned by law and it can not be a profession to survive,” Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society Manisha Dhakal said,” We are implementing and respective the laws and we have not done anything against law.”

“It does not mean that members of gender and sexual minority are not in this profession but we have to explore the reasons behind it. If a people stand at road at the midnight, we should not ask only questions, we should explore reasons behind it, according to Dhakal.

She said government should take this community in a positive way and there should be provisions of reservation for this community. According to her, involving in sex profession is not an interest but a compulsion. Dhakal said state has not provided rights to this community in a genuine way. “In actual sense, state has not provided any rights to this community.

We need separate quotas in reservation though we are receiving passports and citizenship as per our gender identity,” said Dhakal. “We are minority group but we have not been mentioned under the marginalized community, it is a dual character of state,” said Dhakal.

She said new constitution has ensured rights of this community and they are working to cement it formulating new laws and BDS is actively working. “The article 12, 18 and 42 contains our rights now we need laws. We are approaching concerned stakeholders.

There should be rights for adoption, same-sex marriage should be legalized,” Dhakal said. Dhakal said they are informing stakeholders through interactions and discussions. She said Pahichan Online and Radio program are creating pressures to ensure rights of this community. According to her, society gradually understands about this community. “In the initial days, police use to arrest the members of this community now situation has changed,” Dhakal said. However, she said, police is detaining the sex workers in the night.
