I attended both Mumbai kashish queer Film Festival and Colombo pride this month. India, Srilanka and Nepal like many other developing countries started celebrating June month as LGBTIQ pride month, because US and European has been celebrating it.
Appreciating and marking the Transgenders fighting back and Stonewall uprising that started in the US back then, is a nice thing to get inspiration to continue LGBTIQ rights campaigns. And for North America and most of the Europe, June is a pleasant month, climate-wise, the summer-vibe is perfect there to celebrating pride and festivals.
But in tropical countries like Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Thailand etc. it’s worst time climate-wise, its rosting hot, not fun at all to walk or organise outdoor events. I know donors are funding pride marches but it does have to be a Western copy, exact same time.
Last week activists organised first LGBTIQ International pride march in Nepalgunj and Itihary, Southern cities of Nepal, when temperatures were soaring up to 40*C, that’s a torture for participants, not a pride celebration.
Find better time, like in cooler moths, to celebrating Prides and Festivals.
For Nepal October and April are nicer months, climate-wise, for such outdoor fun events. For India, Sri Lanka and Thailand December is better…
Make the pride original, make them local!
