Transgender team of Bhutan undertakes an exposure visit of Nepal 

Kathmandu (Pahichan) March 2-Eight-member transgender team of Bhutan is in Nepal for a five-day exposure visit to study the tasks undertaken by Nepal in the field of transgender. Among south Asian countries, Nepal has achieved a lot in securing the rights of transgender and homosexuals.   

Transgender came public in Bhutan mainly after 2008 but no organizations have been registered there. The team has consulted about opening an organizations and working in the policy level.  They are also consulting on how to reach out to transgender who are still refusing to be open. The team is led by transgender Dechan Selden has received the information about the activities launched in favor of third gender in Nepal. Dechan is working as beautician in Bhutan.

In Bhutan, there is not any organization that works for the rights of transgender. However, Norwegian government through Global Fund is providing assistance to the Health Ministry of Bhutan is undertaking awareness activities for HIV affected people. Dechan invited the Nepali friends to visit Bhutan informing that they are going to open an office. She said they want to be recognized a man first. “Transgender people in Bhutan are being harassed sexually which has decreased the prestige of third gender,” she said.
