Dan Avery\/Pahichan –\u00a0A new radio station has launched in Tunisia with a focus on LGBT rights, a first in the Arab world. Broadcasting as of December 15, Radio Shams is the brainchild of the LGBT rights organization Shams, with support from the Dutch embassy.<\/p>\n

While much of Radio Shams programming will be devoted to LGBT issues\u2014from civil rights to sex life\u2014it\u2019ll also cover political and economic news.<\/p>\n

Article 230 of the Tunisian penal code criminalizes homosexuality, punishable by up to three years in prison. Last December, two gay men were arrested on suspicion of same-sex activity, forced to undergo anal examinations, and sentenced to eight months in prison. Others have been convicted simply\u00a0for acting feminine<\/a>\u00a0under Article 226, which forbids \u201cassaulting public decency with an obscene attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a>Tunisia Agrees To End Forced Anal Probes Of Suspected Homosexuals<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Samir Dilou, Tunisia\u2019s human rights minister, insists the concept of sexual orientation \u201cis specific to the West\u201d and that homosexuals need to be \u201ctreated medically.\u201d Dilou also attacked\u00a0Gayday magazine,<\/a>\u00a0Tunisia\u2019s first (and only) gay outlet, claiming \u201cfreedom of speech has its limits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Predictably, Radio Shams has not been universally embraced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a difference between freedoms, moral decay and chaotic values,\u201d Tounsi Hor\u00a0told Al Arabiya<\/a>, adding that homosexuality is not compatible with Islam or Tunisian culture. He called on the government to suspend Radio Sham \u201cto put an end to the messages which this minority, that doesn\u2019t respect [Islam] and that encourages vice, will promote.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November, the LGBT documentary\u00a0Upon the Shadow<\/em>\u00a0was screened\u00a0at a film festival in Carthage<\/a>. While some audience members walked out, those who remained gave it a standing applause.<\/p>\n
