{"id":10645,"date":"2018-08-09T18:22:48","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T12:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=10645"},"modified":"2018-08-09T18:22:48","modified_gmt":"2018-08-09T12:37:48","slug":"malaysia-ministers-removal-of-lgbti-activists-portraits-a-deeply-discriminatory-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/malaysia-ministers-removal-of-lgbti-activists-portraits-a-deeply-discriminatory-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia: Minister\u2019s removal of LGBTI activists\u2019 portraits a deeply discriminatory act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmadu (Pahichan) August 9 &#8211; Following the news that two portraits of LGBTI activists were removed from public display at the George Town Festival in Penang on the orders of the country\u2019s Religious Minister, Rachel Chhoa-Howard, Amnesty International\u2019s Malaysia Researcher, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe removal of these portraits is a deeply discriminatory act grossly at odds with the Pakatan Harapan government\u2019s stated commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusiveness across Malaysian society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, it\u2019s a decision that\u2019s entirely in keeping with several of the Minister\u2019s recent announcements, which have demonized LGBTI people and put them at greater risk of harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaysia\u2019s new administration must seize the opportunity to set higher human rights standards across the region. This includes ensuring an inclusive, equal and accepting society for LGBTI people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Penang State Government removed the portraits of prominent LGBTI rights activists Nisha Ayub and Pang Khee Teik after being contacted by Religious Minister Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who told media:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was informed of the exhibition that showcased their pictures, along with the rainbow pride flag, in a public gallery.
