{"id":10683,"date":"2018-08-15T16:37:37","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T10:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=10683"},"modified":"2018-08-15T16:41:00","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T10:56:00","slug":"tales-of-transgender-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/tales-of-transgender-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Tales of transgender people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Asmika Guragain\/Pahichan &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Bhumika Shrestha, a transgender, takes a trip down \u00a0the memory lane when she was grappling with antithetical situations. \u00a0Bhumika was, in fact, accustomed to hearing derogatory words such as \u00a0&#8216;chhakka or hijara&#8221;. But did people ever try to \u00a0understand Bhumika&#8217;s anguish and feelings? Perhaps, not!<\/p>\n<p>Bhumika loved to put on her sister&#8217;s dress and \u00a0makeover when she was just five. Even her parents seemed least bothered \u00a0to see their 5-year-old son&#8217;s interest in a girl&#8217;s costume.<\/p>\n<p>However, things started getting complicated when \u00a0she entered her teenage years. &#8220;My friends, neighbors, and unknown boys \u00a0started bullying me,&#8221; says Bhumika. &#8220;I also had to drop out from my \u00a0school when some teachers insisted that I should \u00a0behave like a boy,&#8221; she recalls with tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Bhumika was only 16 when she met Pinky Gurung, a \u00a0transgender. &#8220;I was waiting for a bus at Ratna Park when I noticed Pinky \u00a0staring at me making me feel uncomfortable,&#8221; recalls Bhumika. &#8220;Later \u00a0when she took me to Blue Diamond Society (BDS), \u00a0my happiness knew no bounds to encounter with other transgender,&#8221; she \u00a0added.<\/p>\n<p>She started grooming herself later to win the Miss \u00a0Pink transgender beauty pageant in 2007. This title transformed the life \u00a0of this 30-year-old Bhumika augmenting her confidence and later making \u00a0her the first transgender person to be the \u00a0general convention member of Nepali Congress and to contest the \u00a0elections to the Constituent Assembly as the proportional representative \u00a0candidate from Kathmandu constituency-9.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not all. She also unbolted her journey into \u00a0the Nepali film industry where she will be seen in an upcoming Nepali \u00a0movie &#8216;Kanchhi&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stardom that I gained after winning the \u00a0pageant, and the opportunity to contest the PR candidacy, enthused me,&#8221; \u00a0she said. Her involvement and entirety for the rights of transgender \u00a0took her far away from the birth-name, Kailash, a \u00a0boy&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Pinky Gurung, 40, who hails from \u00a0Lamjung, reminiscences of having more female friends than male friends \u00a0at school. &#8220;Despite being a boy, I was often feverish and girlish due to \u00a0which my friends used to call me with belittling \u00a0names. I sometimes used to question myself about my nature,&#8221; recalls \u00a0Pinky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"1534319127786415.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/static.apdnews.com\/image\/20180815\/1534319127786415.jpg\" alt=\"pinky.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pinky, in fact, was Sanjeev for the society. It \u00a0took her almost 15-20 years to open up her identity in the society. &#8220;I used to carry skirts and dress in my bag and used to change it at my \u00a0friend&#8217;s cafe,&#8221; she reminisces. &#8220;I opened up myself \u00a0in the society when I was 29.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After working as an activist for several years at \u00a0the Blue Diamond Society, Pinky became its President. Having worked for \u00a011 years with the BDS, she was nominated as the party candidate under \u00a0the proportional representation system in the \u00a0parliamentary election from Naya Sakti Party in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though I was not elected, I appreciate the \u00a0party for providing the opportunity to a person belonging to minority \u00a0LGBTI community,&#8221; she says adding that she will remain active in \u00a0politics to work for LGBTI communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Sophie Sunuwar, a proud transgender woman \u00a0proved herself by exhibiting her artistic skills. He was born as a son \u00a0in the family and even helped the mother in the household chores. Sophie \u00a0was skilled in dancing, acting, cooking, \u00a0drawing, and even knitting sweaters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"1534319147840799.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/static.apdnews.com\/image\/20180815\/1534319147840799.jpg\" alt=\"sophie 1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I realized that I was different. My family noticed \u00a0changes in me but they never raised a question about my gender,&#8221; Sophie \u00a0told APD. Her journey started when she initiated working as an LGBT \u00a0activist with BDS where she met other people \u00a0like her.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie, 31 of Baneshwor, worked with WOW magazine. \u00a0&#8220;Working in WOW (World of Women) magazine was a starting phase where I \u00a0got to rivet my makeup skills to many celebrities,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Working with this magazine not only backed her to \u00a0annex other experiences but also assisted her to open her own makeup \u00a0studio called &#8216;Reveal&#8217; in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The road until this moment has been rocky. There \u00a0was a time when I wanted to leave my passion and work but I gave myself \u00a0another chance. And here I am, Nepal&#8217;s first transgender makeup artist,&#8221; \u00a0she asserts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All you need in life is confidence and ignorance, \u00a0then success is sure,&#8221; this popular saying of Mark Twain is proved right \u00a0by them.
