Kathmandu (Pahichan) August 28 – Bermuda\u2019s court of appeal is to hear a last-ditch effort by the country\u2019s government to block equal marriage.<\/p>\n

The British Overseas Territory has been stuck in a vicious cycle over same-sex marriage ever since a\u00a0May 2017 Supreme Court ruling<\/a>\u00a0that gave same-sex couples the right to marry.<\/p>\n

Rather than accept the ruling,\u00a0the Bermudian government\u00a0passed a fresh law<\/a>\u00a0that controversially re-banned same-sex weddings \u2013\u00a0only for the Supreme Court to strike down that law\u00a0as well<\/a>\u00a0 in June 2018.<\/p>\n

Despite two major defeats, the government has confirmed it will launch yet another appeal, making a final last-ditch effort to keep the ban on same-sex weddings.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Bernews<\/a><\/em>, the appeal is to be heard by the Court of Appeal from November 7 to 9.<\/p>\n

Minister of Home Affairs Walton Brown said:\u00a0\u201cWe have filed an appeal in this matter. We look forward to having this matter heard by the court of Appeal.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If the appeal is victorious, it would mean that same-sex marriage has been legalised and re-banned twice in close succession, a world first.<\/p>\n

Equal marriage\u00a0activist Tony Brannon slammed the government for\u00a0squandering money on yet more attempts to stave off same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0the Royal Gazette<\/a><\/em>: \u201cThe legal minds I speak to tell me it will be a slam dunk for the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are going to lose again \u2014 at least that\u2019s what I think is going to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people having to put their hands in their pocket to fight for justice and now it is going to come out of the taxpayers\u2019 fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Melvyn Bassett of anti-gay lobbying group Preserve Marriage told the outlet: \u201cWe believe we have done our part to encourage the Government to continue to do what the people have expressed they would like in relation to the legislation that was passed.<\/p>\n
