Homosexuality remains illegal in 71 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The new Trump administration policy update was circulated in a United Nations (UN) memo.<\/p>\n<p>The memo states: &#8220;As of 1 October 2018, same-sex domestic partners accompanying or seeking to join newly arrived United Nations officials must provide proof of marriage to be eligible for a G-4 visa or to seek a change into such status.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>G-4 visas are granted to employees of international organisations and their immediate families.<\/p>\n<p>According to the State Department, &#8220;only a relationship legally considered to be a marriage in the jurisdiction where it took place establishes eligibility as a spouse for immigration purposes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/142E1\/production\/_103675628_b7f1f39f-e902-49cc-832d-892377410040.jpg\" alt=\"The stage is set for a rally in support of same sex marriage with balloon letters reading YES and rainbow balloons\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">GETTY IMAGES<\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Same-sex marriage remains unrecognised or illegal across much of the world<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a 12 July note to the UN, the US Mission to the UN lauded the change as a step towards equality, saying &#8220;same-sex spouses of US diplomats now enjoy the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex spouses&#8221;, US media report.<\/p>\n<p>But critics have called the move unfair to homosexual partners, given a large number of countries do not recognise same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Former US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power decried the policy, calling it &#8220;needlessly cruel and bigoted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The UN-Globe, advocates for LGBT equality in the UN,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unglobe.org\/advocacy-notes\/2018\/9\/28\/important-information-for-g-4-visa-holders-in-thenbspunited-states\">said the Trump administration&#8217;s new policy was &#8220;an unfortunate change in rules&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"social-embed\">\n<div class=\"social-embed-post social-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"embed embed-twitter\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Couples already inside of the United States could go to city hall and get married. But they could potentially be exposed to prosecution if they return to a country that criminalises homosexuality or same-sex marriages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the end of this year, unmarried same-sex partners of diplomats and UN employees will be expected to leave the US within 30 days if they remain unmarried and without a visa status change.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/284115.pdf\">The only exception, however, would be same-sex partners of officials coming from countries that do not recognise same-sex marriage<\/a>.
