I look forward to further strengthening the Nepal-America friendship and I hope our diplomatic engagements will promote continued partnership and cooperation between our two countries,\u201d said Ambassador Berry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Ambassador had previously worked in Nepal for two years (2007-2009) as the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ambassador Berry\u2019s Biography<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ambassador Berry is a career diplomat and member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor.\u00a0 He has served as a diplomat since 1993, and spent more than twenty years abroad on assignment for the U.S. State Department.\u00a0 Most recently, he served in Washington, DC as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, a position he held since late-2016.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Prior to that, he was appointed as the State Department\u2019s first Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons (2015 \u2013 2017).\u00a0 The Ambassador marks his second assignment in Nepal, having served previously as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu from 2007 \u2013 2009.\u00a0 He was subsequently appointed twice as Principal Officer and Consul General, first at the U.S. Consulate General in Auckland, New Zealand (2009 -2012), and later at the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2012 -2015).\u00a0 He served as Deputy Principal Officer\/Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Cape Town, South Africa from 2003-2007.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ambassador Berry\u2019s early career took him to postings in Bangladesh (1993-1995), Egypt (1996-1998), and Uganda (1998-2002), as well as previous service in Washington DC in the State Department\u2019s Bureau of African Affairs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A rural Colorado native, Ambassador Berry earned his B.A. from Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas in 1987 and did graduate work at Adelaide University, Adelaide, Australia in 1988 as a Rotary Foundation Scholar.\u00a0 He is married and has two child.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Embassy in Kathmandu has provided him the identity of male.\u00a0 The new ambassador has always been a source of inspiration to the LGBTI community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LGBTI movement in Nepal has already gathered momentum in Nepal. This community has already expressed its happiness over the new appointment that is from their community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nepal has already started to provide citizenship and passport to LGBTI community on the basis of their gender identity. The constitution promulgated in 2015 has also recognized this community but laws are yet to be formulated.\u00a0 The article 12, 18 and 42 of the new constitution has ensured the rights of this community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2015, all states of America have legalized the same-sex marriage. American government has ensured the right of equality and identity to the members of this community. American Ambassador to Germany is also from this community.
