{"id":11242,"date":"2018-10-28T17:08:57","date_gmt":"2018-10-28T11:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=11242"},"modified":"2018-10-28T21:00:13","modified_gmt":"2018-10-28T15:15:13","slug":"brazils-fearful-lgbt-community-prepares-for-a-proud-homophobe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/brazils-fearful-lgbt-community-prepares-for-a-proud-homophobe\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil\u2019s fearful LGBT community prepares for a \u2018proud homophobe\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu (Pahichan) October 28 &#8211; It was exactly a fortnight after round one of Brazil\u2019s poison-filled presidential election that Aretha Sadick found herself sprinting for her life away from a man wielding an iron bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a hate crime. No doubt about it. Hate is the only word,\u201d recalled the 29-year-old black transgender artist and campaigner, still shaken by her run-in with death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was on a street I always walk down. An area where I always go. And I\u2019ve never experienced such an overt act of hostility,\u201d she said. \u201cThese things don\u2019t happen by accident. There\u2019s been a validation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadick and fellow members of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s LGBT community are clear who they blame for legitimising such violence: a far-right firebrand who is notorious for his spiteful, homophobic remarks and looks very likely to become Brazil\u2019s next president on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>In nearly three decades as a congressman,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/jair-bolsonaro\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>\u00a0has never concealed his dislike of gay people. \u201cYes, I\u2019m homophobic \u2013 and very proud of it,\u201d he once proclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2013\/42\/stephen-fry-out-there-ep2.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">2013 interview with Stephen Fry<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which the British actor later called \u201cone of the most chilling confrontations I\u2019ve ever had with a human being\u201d \u2013 the far-right populist claimed \u201chomosexual fundamentalists\u201d were brainwashing heterosexual children to \u201cbecome gays and lesbians to satisfy them sexually in the future\u201d. Bolsonaro declared: \u201cBrazilian society doesn\u2019t like homosexuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The politician \u2013 whom polls give a 12-point lead over his leftist rival Fernando Haddad, down from 18% a fortnight ago \u2013 has ramped up such rhetoric during the campaign, accusing LGBT campaigners and other minorities of \u201cself-pity\u201d, while simultaneously claiming that he will govern for all.<\/p>\n<p>Activists, however, say that while violence and discrimination against the LGBT community have long existed, Bolsonaro\u2019s brazen bigotry has helped launch a new era of brutality and threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s as if the gates of hell have been opened \u2013 as if hunting season had been declared,\u201d said Beto de Jesus, a veteran LGBT activist and founder of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s huge annual gay pride parade. \u201cIt\u2019s barbarism.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\" element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--not-upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\"><\/aside>\n<p>James Green, an American academic with longstanding ties to Brazil\u2019s gay movement, said Bolsonaro\u2019s \u201crepulsive\u201d discourse had left some gay and lesbian couples wondering if it was even still safe to hold hands in public: \u201cHe has unleashed all the demons in Brazilian society and they are out there now: unmasked and vicious and violent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renan Quinalha, a S\u00e3o Paulo-based lawyer and LGBT activist, said recent weeks had seen a \u201cfrightening\u201d spike in reports of physical or verbal abuse carried out by Bolsonaro supporters. He described a mood of fear and trepidation, both at the violence and the prospect that, as president, Bolsonaro might try to roll back hard-fought gains such as the 2011 legalisation of same-sex unions.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the far-right candidate suffered a shock defeat, the hatred he had fanned and sanctioned would remain, he said. \u201cIt\u2019s no longer just about Bolsonaro, but a set of values and postures that he represents and that will live on in Brazilian society.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"img-3\" class=\"element element-image img--landscape fig--narrow-caption fig--has-shares \" We will resist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One place that is already happening is Casa 1, an LGBT shelter and cultural centre whose exterior has been plastered with anti-Bolsonaro posters reading: \u201cNot him. Never. Ever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The walls inside are similarly decked with protest art. \u201cWithout struggle (and poofs) there will be no revolution!\u201d reads one banner. Another says: \u201cStop killing trans!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran Giusti, the centre\u2019s founder, said Casa 1 had been conceived as a space that was politicised but had no party affiliations. Facing Bolsonaro\u2019s threat, however, it was throwing its weight behind his Workers\u2019 party (PT) opponent, Haddad, hosting meetings of an anti-Bolsonaro \u201cbrigade\u201d and serving as a distribution centre for PT pamphlets that ask voters: \u201cWhat kind of a\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/brazil\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Brazil<\/a>\u00a0do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here defending our very survival,\u201d said Giusti, 29.<\/p>\n<p>Casa 1 is also offering counselling sessions to those disturbed by Bolsonaro\u2019s rise. After a pre-election session of \u201cdrag bingo\u201d, Giusti said it would also open its doors as the results were announced: \u201cLots of people don\u2019t want to go through this moment alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giusti said he saw some bright spots amid the gloom. In a historic first, two trans politicians, Erica Malunguinho and Erika Hilton, recently secured places in S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s state legislature. But the overall atmosphere was bleak: \u201cWe can feel the fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadick \u2013 who escaped serious harm after a friend saw her being attacked, and intervened \u2013 said she also felt despondent. As mayor of S\u00e3o Paulo from 2013 to 2017, Haddad had assisted its \u201cT community\u201d, creating an educational programme called Transcidadania (Transcitizenship), she remembered. Photograph: Tom Phillips for the Observer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sadick said she was so troubled she was considering exit strategies. \u201cI have been talking to my friends about the possibility of leaving Brazil, about asking for political asylum,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI just don\u2019t know how much I want to expose myself and my body \u2026 Is it worth being a martyr?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One member of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s LGBT community will not get that chance. Two days after the attack on Sadick, Jessica Gonzaga, a 25-year-old trans woman, was murdered just a few streets away, near some of the city\u2019s most famous LGBT bars and clubs.<\/p>\n<p>One witness recalled hearing shouts of \u201cBolsonaro!\u201d and \u201cFaggots must die!\u201d as Gonzaga was stabbed \u2013 although the victim\u2019s cousin, Gabriela, said police now believed it had been a crime of passion \u2013 the latest chapter in a long and brutal history of exclusion and violence to which Brazil\u2019s trans community is exposed.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday lunchtime, as Brazil prepared to vote, Gonzaga\u2019s body arrived at a palm-dotted cemetery in the city\u2019s south inside a black hatchback provided by the town hall.<\/p>\n<p>The mourners were so few in number that the\u00a0<em>Observer<\/em>\u00a0had to help carry her plywood coffin into an outdoor chapel with a mud-coated floor and pigeons nesting in its roof. One of the nine people who had turned up to say goodbye placed two pots of yellow and white marguerite daisies on the casket. Another wore a badge reading: \u201cEle N\u00e3o!\u201d (\u201cNot Him!).<\/p>\n<p>Trans activist Maite Schneider said she had come \u201cbecause a piece of me has died. I live one block away from where she was killed \u2013 it could have been me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the motive \u2013 political or not \u2013 it doesn\u2019t matter. It\u2019s a life,\u201d Schneider, 47, continued. \u201cJust this year I must have been to 15 burials.
