{"id":11300,"date":"2018-11-12T13:10:39","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T07:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=11300"},"modified":"2018-11-12T13:10:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T07:25:39","slug":"scotland-to-embed-lgbti-teaching-across-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/scotland-to-embed-lgbti-teaching-across-curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Scotland to embed LGBTI teaching across curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu (Pahichan) November 12 &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/scotland\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0will become the first country in the world to embed the teaching of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex rights in the school curriculum, in what campaigners have described as a historic moment.<\/p>\n<p>State schools will be required to teach pupils about the history of LGBTI equalities and movements, as well as tackling homophobia and transphobia and exploring LGBTI identity, after ministers accepted in full the recommendations of a working group led by the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiecampaign.co.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign<\/a>. There will be no exemptions or opt-outs to the policy, which will embed LGBTI inclusive education across the curriculum and across subjects and which the Scottish government believes is a world first.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\">Jordan Daly, the co-founder of TIE, said the \u201cdestructive legacy\u201d of section 28 had come to an end. This legislation, introduced in 1988, banned local authorities in the UK from \u201cpromoting\u201d homosexuality, until it was eventually repealed in Scotland 2001 and in the rest of the UK two years later.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|300,274|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|300,274|fluid\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/uk-news\/article\/ng_1__container__\">Daly said: \u201cThis is a monumental victory for our campaign, and a historic moment for our country. The implementation of LGBTI inclusive education across all state schools is a world first. In a time of global uncertainty, this sends a strong and clear message to LGBTI young people that they are valued here in Scotland.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A study for TIE found that nine in 10 LGBTI Scots experience homophobia at school, and 27% reported they had attempted suicide after being bullied. The investigation also found there was little understanding in schools about prejudice against people with variations of sex characteristics and intersex bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy first minister, John Swinney, said: \u201cScotland is already considered one of the most progressive countries in Europe for LGBTI equality. I am delighted to announce we will be the first country in the world to have LGBTI-inclusive education embedded within the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur education system must support everyone to reach their full potential. That is why it is vital the curriculum is as diverse as the young people who learn in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scotland has regularly been ranked as one of the best countries in Europe in relation to legal protections for LGBTI people, despite the fact that it decriminalised homosexuality in 1980, 13 years later than England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale described the country as having \u201cthe gayest parliament in the world\u201d: at the time four of Scotland\u2019s six party leaders (Dugdale, the Conservatives\u2019 Ruth Davidson, Ukip\u2019s David Coburn and the Greens\u2019 Patrick Harvie) identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes after\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2018\/nov\/06\/squeamish-sex-education-dfe-plans-doomed-to-fail-womens-group\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Guardian reported on Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0that women\u2019s groups have written to the education secretary, Damian Hinds, warning that the Westminster government\u2019s sex education plans for England were \u201csqueamish\u201d and doomed to failure unless radically revised.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the Welsh government announced an overhaul of relationship and sex education in schools, with plans to make the subject LGBT inclusive and embed it across the curriculum rather than teaching it separately.<\/p>\n<p>Source : Guardian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu (Pahichan) November 12 &#8211;\u00a0Scotland\u00a0will become the first country in the world to embed the teaching of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex rights in the school curriculum, in what campaigners have described as a historic moment.<br \/>\nState schools will be required to teach pupils about the history of LGBTI equalities and movements, as well as tackling homophobia and transphobia and exploring LGBTI identity, after ministers accepted in full the recommendations of a working group led by the\u00a0Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign.
