Kathmandu (Pahichan) January 21 – There were incredible steps forward for LGBTI rights around the world. Austria, Taiwan, Ecuador and Northern Ireland all legalised same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

2020 will\u00a0likely\u00a0be equally\u00a0busy. Here are\u00a0eight\u00a0legal cases coming up that we’ll be keeping a close eye on.<\/p>\n

United States<\/h2>\n

The US\u00a0Supreme Court is set to decide whether LGBTI\u00a0people are protected from discrimination at work\u00a0by the 1964 Civil Rights Act.<\/p>\n

Access to bathrooms for transgender students will be back in the news.<\/p>\n

HIV-positive military personnel, who were dismissed or banned from service, will have their case against\u00a0the Pentagon heard.<\/p>\n

Botswana<\/h2>\n

The government is appealing last year’s High Court ruling that decriminalised gay sex. A decision is expected later this year.<\/p>\n

Previously, same-sex relationships could be punished with up to seven\u00a0years in prison.<\/p>\n

Singapore<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At least three\u00a0men have launched legal bids to decriminalise colonial-era bans on gay sex\u00a0on the grounds either that it’s unconstitutional or violates human dignity.<\/p>\n

Roy Tan, a retired doctor, is ‘eager to see this archaic law, which has no place in modern society’, struck down.<\/p>\n

He said: ‘By institutionalising discrimination, it alienates them [LGBTI people] from having a sense of belonging and purposeful place in our society, and prevents them from taking pride in Singapore\u2019s achievements.’<\/p>\n

Jamaica<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Another country striving to overturn\u00a0old homophobic\u00a0laws is Jamaica.<\/p>\n

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have lodged a petition that \u2013\u00a0while not being legally binding \u2013 could send shockwaves throughout the region.<\/p>\n

Campaigners are challenging similar colonial ‘buggery laws’\u00a0in Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica too.<\/p>\n

Barbados<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A law punishing sex between men with life imprisonment was challenged in 2018 by the IACHR.<\/p>\n

They’re still waiting to hear back from the\u00a0government, but if the commission recommends reform and the government refuses, the matter could be escalated\u00a0to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong<\/h2>\n

Homosexuality has been decriminalised in Hong Kong since 1991. Now two cases aim to bring same-sex marriage to\u00a0the city, despite an October judgement stating that there was no obligation to allow LGBTI\u00a0unions.<\/p>\n

Kenya<\/h2>\n

In May 2019 the High Court ruled to keep the ban on gay sex, which is punishable by 14 years in jail.<\/p>\n

The National Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission disagree and are\u00a0appealing the judgement.<\/p>\n

Europe<\/h2>\n

Last year we handed in our 300k signature petition to Russian authorities\u00a0calling on President Putin to end the persecution of LGBTI people in Chechnya.<\/p>\n

This year the European Court of Human Rights is looking at\u00a0the case of a gay man who said he was persecuted in Chechnya, as well as\u00a0holding an inquiry into a series of arrests in 2017 of LGBTI\u00a0people in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n
