The recent military conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which began on 28 February 2026, has rapidly escalated into a major geopolitical crisis in the Middle East. The coordinated airstrikes on Iranian targets triggered widespread retaliation from Iran, including missile and drone attacks across the region, turning the situation into a multi-front war with global consequences. Although Nepal lies far from the conflict zone, the interconnected nature of the global economy means that such wars inevitably affect even distant countries like Nepal. The consequences of such conflict are not limited to the Middle East alone. In today’s interconnected world, any regional war can have global repercussions.

The war started when the United States and Israel launched joint strikes targeting Iran’s military and nuclear-related infrastructure. This action was part of long-standing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence.Iran responded strongly with attacks on Israel and U.S. bases in several Middle Eastern countries, expanding the conflict into a broader regional crisis. Recent developments show that the war has also disrupted global energy supplies, trade routes, and political stability, raising concerns worldwide.

After joint military actions by the U.S. and Israel in Iran, regional tensions have escalated. Iran’s restriction on movement through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz has raised serious concerns about global oil supply. A significant portion of the world’s oil passes through this route. Iran is a major oil-producing country, and the region plays a crucial role in global energy supply. If the conflict disrupts oil production, refining, or transportation, global oil prices could rise sharply. For a country like Nepal, which relies entirely on imported petroleum products, this situation could create serious economic pressure. Rising prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene, and LPG would directly impact transportation, industries, agriculture, and daily consumer goods. This would lead to overall inflation in the economy.

As fuel prices rise, production costs increase, which in turn raises the prices of goods and services. Essential items such as food, vegetables, fruits, construction materials, and medicines become more expensive. The purchasing power of ordinary citizens’declines and low-income groups are the most affected. This can lead to social imbalance, increased poverty, and a decline in living standards.Due to the conflict, fuel prices have increased significantly.Nepal has already raised aviation fuel prices drastically to prevent shortages, leading to increased airfares and transportation costs.

Tourism is a major source of income for Nepal. However, flight disruptions through Middle Eastern airspace have affected international travel routes and increased airfares discourage tourists from visiting Nepal. This could slow down Nepal’s tourism recovery after previous global crises.Remittances contribute significantly to Nepal’s GDP, with many Nepali workers employed in Gulf countries.Instability in the Middle East threatens jobs and safety of migrant workers. Any decline in remittances could weaken Nepal’s economy. Rising global prices for fuel, food, and fertilizers increase the cost of living in Nepal that causes Inflation and Economic Pressure on agricultural inputs which may become more expensive, affecting the farmers.

Additionally, undersea fiber optic cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea serve as key digital connections between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. If these are damaged due to conflict, Nepal’s internet capacity could drop significantly.Education could also be impacted. Nepali students studying abroad, especially in the Middle East, may face safety concerns. War could disrupt visas, accommodation, and academic activities, creating uncertainty about their future.

Nepal government and security concerns increase. The Government of Nepal has issued advisories for Nepali citizens in conflict-affected regions, urged caution for travelers and monitored international developments closely. On the diplomatic and political front, conflicts between powerful nations can shift global power balances. Countries like China, Russia, and India may play increased roles. Small nations like Nepal need to adopt balanced diplomacy and avoid unnecessary tensions with any side.

From a security perspective, there could also be indirect effects such as increased risks of terrorism, cyber-attacks, or other global security challenges. The Nepalese government needs to prepare in advance to address such risks. Measures could include developing alternative energy sources, strengthening economic policies, improving supply systems, and reducing dependence on foreign employment. Proper stockpiling of essential goods and effective price control mechanisms are also necessary during crises.

However, Nepal itself remains safe and unaffected directly by military threats.

Even though Nepal have some positive aspect, If the present Government things on this issue of Increasing focus on alternative energy (like hydropower and electric cooking) and has opportunities to diversify trade and reduce fuel dependency.

In Conclusion, The America–Israel attack on Iran is not just a regional conflict but a global crisis with far-reaching consequences. For Nepal, the effects are mainly economic rather than military. Rising fuel prices, inflation, risks to remittances and disruptions in tourism highlight the country’s vulnerability to international events.Although Nepal remains geographically safe, its economy is deeply connected to global systems, making it sensitive to such conflicts. Therefore, this situation emphasizes the need for Nepal to strengthen economic resilience, diversify energy sources, and reduce dependency on external factors.Energy, economy, employment, trade, tourism, education, and diplomacy—all sectors could be affected. Therefore, Nepal must remain alert to such international developments and prepare long-term strategies to minimize potential risks.

Conflicts between powerful nations do not only affect those countries themselves but also have direct or indirect impacts on smaller and developing nations around the world.
