Trump said Thursday that transgender people should be allowed to use whatever bathroom they feel most comfortable with \u2014 including at Trump Tower in New York.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dipping into a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/12\/us\/rights-law-deepens-political-rifts-in-north-carolina.html\">contentious issue<\/a> by taking a stand many Republicans oppose, Mr. Trump told a town-hall-style event, hosted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/donald-trump-joins-today-show-live-town-hall-answers-voters-t87551\">by NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show at Rockefeller Center<\/a> in Manhattan, that when people go to the restroom, they should \u201cuse the bathroom they feel is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, was responding to a question about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/24\/us\/north-carolina-to-limit-bathroom-use-by-birth-gender.html\">bill that North Carolina\u2019s governor signed into law<\/a> last month that bars individuals in the state from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex \u2014 the one listed on their birth certificate. Since then, there has been a backlash that has included denunciations from businesses and celebrities opposed to the state\u2019s action. And transgender issues more generally have pitted social conservatives against business interests that traditionally have been part of the Republican coalition in the South and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNorth Carolina did something \u2014 it was very strong \u2014 and they\u2019re paying a big price,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s a lot of problems. And I heard \u2014 one of the best answers I heard was from a commentator yesterday saying, leave it the way it is, right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that before the law passed, there had been \u201cvery few problems\u201d but now North Carolina is experiencing an exodus of businesses and \u201cstrife\u201d from people on both sides of the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou leave it the way it is,\u201d he said. \u201cThere have been very few complaints the way it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">North Carolina\u2019s law, which also removed anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and the backlash to it are now at the heart of the state\u2019s hotly contested governor\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asked if the Trump organization employs any transgender people, Mr. Trump said he truly did not know, but added, \u201cI probably do.\u201d And in response to a follow-up question, he said that if Caitlyn Jenner were to walk into Trump Tower and want to use a bathroom, he would be comfortable with her choosing any bathroom she wanted. \u201cThat is correct,\u201d Mr. Trump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a big move to create new bathrooms\u201d for transgender people alone, Mr. Trump said. \u201cFirst of all, I think that would be discriminatory in a certain way. It would be unbelievably expensive for businesses and for the country. Leave it the way it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Trump\u2019s main rival for the Republican nomination, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, immediately seized on the \u201cToday\u201d show comments on several platforms, pushing out a statement from his campaign, assailing Mr. Trump\u2019s remarks both on Glenn Beck\u2019s radio program and at a rally in Maryland, and sending out this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/723161841308958720\">critical message on Twitter<\/a>: \u201cCommon sense: grown men shouldn\u2019t be in bathrooms w\/ little girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to Mr. Beck, Mr. Cruz said the country has \u201cgone off the deep end\u201d and the idea of so-called genderless bathrooms is \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy 5-year-old knows the difference between boys and girls,\u201d Mr. Cruz said, referring to his younger daughter. \u201cThat\u2019s not a reasonable position. It is simply crazy. The idea that grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls \u2014 you don\u2019t need to be a behavioral psychologist to realize bad things can happen and any prudent person wouldn\u2019t allow that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at a campaign event in Maryland, Mr. Cruz said that Mr. Trump had aligned himself with President Obama and Hillary Clinton. \u201cHave we gone stark-raving nuts?\u201d he asked, bemoaning what he said was a culture of political correctness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The question of transgender rights is one of the key social issue debate roiling the Republican Party and the nation more broadly. On Wednesday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/21\/sports\/baseball\/curt-schilling-is-fired-by-espn.html\">ESPN fired Curt Schilling<\/a>, one of its most high-profile analysts and a former All-Star pitcher, for a Facebook post about the North Carolina law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The post featured a crude photograph of an overweight man in women\u2019s clothing and a wig, along with the message, \u201cLET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you\u2019re a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement, ESPN called itself an \u201cinclusive company\u201d and said Mr. Schilling was told that \u201chis conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many social conservatives were quick to condemn Mr. Trump\u2019s comments, saying he could face a backlash, especially among voters in the Republican base, some of whom are already skeptical of his past support of abortion rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of Republicans that are very uncomfortable with this issue, to say the least, or think it\u2019s ridiculous that we\u2019re going down this path and some people believe putting our children at risk,\u201d said Greg Mueller, a conservative strategist. \u201cFor somebody who is trying to build a coalition of conservatives and evangelicals, and then maybe some Democratic votes to get you into the White House, you are taking somewhat of a political risk in the position he took this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Penny Young Nance, the president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwfa.org\/\">Concerned Women for America<\/a>, said Mr. Trump\u2019s remarks on Thursday illustrated \u201cwhy conservatives are right to question his judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHis instincts are wrong on our core values,\u201d she said. \u201cHe has spent his life surrounded by Manhattan elites who have never shopped in a Target. Of course he doesn\u2019t get the outrage. I don\u2019t know if this will ultimately hurt him but it should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Republican primary voters next head to the polls on Tuesday in a series of more socially moderate, Northeastern states, where Mr. Trump is unlikely to pay a political penalty. But his comments could hurt him in states like Indiana, which votes on May 3, or California, which votes on June 7 and contains many conservative pockets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bruce Haynes, a Republican strategist and founding partner of Purple Strategies, said that, like many of Mr. Trump\u2019s comments that seem defy Republican orthodoxy, this one is unlikely to dramatically affect the contours of the presidential race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m not really sure it\u2019s one of those things that changes votes at this point,\u201d Mr. Haynes said. \u201cI think voters who are big picture, big economy voters, are probably already with Trump, and I think voters who are very issue centric, and certainly social conservatives, are already with Cruz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, Mr. Hayes added, the comments could provide Mr. Cruz with an opening to help him win over unbound delegates \u2014 currently the shadow fight playing out between Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz. \u201cSince convention delegates tend to be more socially conservative than the primary electorate at large, it could be another wedge issue that Cruz tries to use to peel off second and third ballot delegates or to prevent Trump from picking up unbound delegates on the first ballot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Copy :\u00a0http :\u00a0http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ashley Parker\/New York (Pahichan) May 1 &#8211; Donald J.
