{"id":6760,"date":"2017-03-11T09:53:37","date_gmt":"2017-03-11T04:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=6760"},"modified":"2017-03-11T09:54:47","modified_gmt":"2017-03-11T04:09:47","slug":"what-you-need-to-know-about-lgbt-rights-in-11-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/what-you-need-to-know-about-lgbt-rights-in-11-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"What you need to know about LGBT rights in 11 maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Kathmandu\/Pahichan &#8211; 2016 saw some strides towards equality for members of the LGBT community, including some firsts. \u00a0For instance, Malta became the first European country to ban conversion therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new <a href=\"http:\/\/tgeu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/167-Affirmation-of-SOGIGE-Act-Malta.pdf\">Affirmation of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression Act<\/a>, anyone found guilty of trying to \u201cchange, repress or eliminate a person\u2019s sexual orientation, gender identity and\/or gender expression\u201d faces fines or a jail sentence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Taiwan is about to allow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2017\/01\/31\/taiwan-verge-history-first-asian-countryto-allow-same-sex-marriage\/97275002\/\">same sex marriage<\/a>, making it the first Asian country to do so.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, became the first sitting prime minister to participate in the country\u2019s Pride festival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seychellesnewsagency.com\/articles\/5198\/Seychelles+parliament+passes+bill+to+decriminalize+sodomy\">homosexuality was decriminalized<\/a> in the Seychelles and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingbelizenews.com\/2016\/08\/10\/supreme-court-rules-section-53-unconstitutional\/\">Belize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>But there is still a long way to go. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humandignitytrust.org\/\">Human Dignity Trust<\/a> there are 75 jurisdictions that continue to make private, consensual sexual conduct between adults of the same sex ilegal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>And only five countries in the world \u2013 Bolivia, Ecuador, Fiji, Malta and the UK \u2013 have constitutions that explicitly guarantee equality for citizens on the basis of sexual orientation as well as gender identity, according to a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/lgbt-rights-and-protections-are-scarce-in-constitutions-around-the-world-ucla-study-finds\">UCLA study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Meanwhile, the changing political climate under the Donald Trump administration has prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-victory-alarms-gay-and-transgender-groups.html\">concern among gay and transgender groups<\/a> about what might happen to LGBT rights in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>These 11 maps, collated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equaldex.com\/\">Equaldex<\/a>, show the state of LGBT rights across the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>Where is homosexuality still illegal?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The latest Equaldex research shows that consensual sexual activity between individuals of the same sex is legal across the northern hemisphere. But across swathes of Asia, Africa and the Middle East it remains illegal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>In some countries, it is punishable by death \u2013 in Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>In other countries, it\u2019s illegal only for men. For example, in Turkmenistan, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe homosexuality is illegal for men but legal for women. This map shows the clear East\/West divide between where you can marry a same-sex partner and where you can\u2019t. Colombia legalized same sex marriage in the last year, but it became illegal in Botswana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Australia is an interesting case, because the LGBT community shares many of the same rights as heterosexuals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2016\/dec\/30\/how-australias-political-parties-fell-out-of-love-with-the-marriage-equality-plebiscite\">except<\/a> when it comes to marriage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Chile&#8217;s president says she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-chile-lgbt-idUSKCN11R2W9\">will send a gay marriage bill <\/a>to Congress in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.weforum.org\/editor\/9uI8oY9C9JLt8jiUyYZV1tNcthJG33PqvzIXP_XCNFI.JPG\" alt=\" Image 2 \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image__credit\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Image: Equaldex<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>Changing gender<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The right to change gender is legal throughout most of the world, but in most places only after surgery. In those countries where same-sex adoption is legal, many stipulate that couples must be married, or can only do it if they are single. In some cases they can only adopt stepchildren. Last year, having already removed its \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d policy for all but transgender people, the US government announced that openly transgender people would now be allowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/01\/us\/transgender-military.html\">serve in the military<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.weforum.org\/editor\/PW5v4PVjNS0zq9o43m_RoWnQlvnI4SxoOo-VjgVNf74.JPG\" alt=\" Image 8 \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image__credit\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Image: Equaldex<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>Blood donations<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Several countries made blood donations by gay men legal in the last year, but many are still subject to deferrals (a waiting time before a man can donate after having sex).<\/p>\n<p>According to Equaldex, blood donation by gay men became legal in Martinique, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Israel, Northern Ireland and Ireland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>But it was banned in Egypt, and a one-year deferral period was introduced in Belgium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.weforum.org\/editor\/6P2xR1NGtl70MGDYv7Ruft7qaKKSUcEAHAcC33lqfmA.JPG\" alt=\" Image 9 \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image__credit\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Image: Equaldex<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><b>Age of consent<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>In the last year, the age for consent for heterosexuals and homosexuals was made equal in Australia and Belize. The crowdsourced project works a lot like a \u2018LGBT Wikipedia\u2019 \u2013 anyone can join, edit and amend information.
