Dawn Ennis\/Pahichan –\u00a0Voters in the first nation in the world to legalize same-sex marriage<\/a>\u00a0reelected their conservative prime minister and handed a stinging defeat to a far right wing Islamophobe<\/a>, who pledged to protect The Netherlands\u2019 LGBTQ community from Muslim terrorists.<\/p>\n

Geert Wilders tweeted following his loss to Mark Rutte that the PM had \u201cnot seen the last of me yet!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dubbed by some \u201cThe Dutch Donald Trump<\/a>,\u201d Wilders had framed part of his #StopIslam campaign as a defense of national values<\/a>, including its landmark establishment of\u00a0marriage equality<\/a> in 2001, as BuzzFeed<\/em> reported. Wilders became known as a national leader on LGBTQ rights in the years since. And he wasn\u2019t alone in spreading\u00a0anti-Muslim sentiments: even moderate politicians echoed Wilder\u2019s\u00a0message that Muslim immigrants to the Netherlands threaten gay people.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s Marine Le Pen<\/a>\u00a0is among the\u00a0nationalists outside the Netherlands\u00a0following Wilder\u2019s lead in saying they are defending LGBTQ rights by opposing Muslim immigration<\/a>, according to BuzzFeed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A profile\u00a0in Vox<\/em> identified an openly gay predecessor<\/a> as having plowed the way forward for Wilders:\u00a0Pim Fortuyn was an even more ideological and flamboyant political leader.<\/p>\n

Fortuyn was a member of the right-wing \u201cLivable Netherlands\u201d party<\/a> whose extremist views forced his dismissal. In\u00a0an interview with the New Yorker,<\/em> he promised to keep out Muslim immigrants:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cAs far as I am concerned, no Muslim will ever come in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe freedom that gay people should have \u2014 to kiss each other, to marry, to have children \u2014 is exactly what Islam is fighting against,\u201d Wilders told BuzzFeed<\/em><\/a>\u00a0following the attack on Pulse nightclub\u00a0in Orlando, Fla. He said the mass shooting should make people realize\u00a0\u201cthat we\u2019ve imported so much Islam to the Western free countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

His anti-muslim views led to his conviction on charges of committing a hate crime<\/a> \u2014 without penalty \u2014 in December 2016.<\/p>\n

The Party for Freedom led by Wilders, who since 1992 has been married to a woman, Krisztina Wilders, gained 5 seats in parliament for a total of 20 seats. But it was the pro-environment parties like the GreenLeft Party that nearly quadrupled their seats,<\/a> according to the Independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The pro-refugee Greens jumped from four seats to 14, an historic victory that turned it into the largest party on the left wing of Dutch politics for the first time.<\/p>\n

The party\u2019s leader, 30-year-old Jesse Klaver, has been\u00a0favorably compared to\u00a0Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.<\/p>\n
