{"id":6840,"date":"2017-03-19T15:35:23","date_gmt":"2017-03-19T09:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=6840"},"modified":"2017-03-19T15:35:23","modified_gmt":"2017-03-19T09:50:23","slug":"japan-becomes-first-country-in-the-world-to-elect-a-transgender-man-to-a-public-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/japan-becomes-first-country-in-the-world-to-elect-a-transgender-man-to-a-public-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan becomes first country in the world to elect a transgender man to a public office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Japan (Pahichan) March 19 &#8211; Japan has become the first country in the world to elect a transgender man to a public office.\u00a0Tomoya Hosoda 25, won 21 out of 22 seats to become a councillor for the city of Iruma, in the central region of Kanto.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Hosoda said he does not just want to fight for LGBTQ rights but also for the rights of the disabled and the elderly, by constructing a system that embraces diversity and helps minorities, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saitama-np.co.jp\/news\/2017\/03\/14\/07.html\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese media reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil recently, people have acted as if sexual minorities do not exist. We have many hurdles to overcome, but I hope to live up to everyone\u2019s expectations\u201d, he told <a href=\"http:\/\/stonewalljapan.org\/news\/tag\/tomoya-hosoda\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stonewall<\/a>, an organisation which supports LGBTQ people in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>He added having received many messages of support and gratitude from\u00a0the LGBTQ community ever since he announced his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Hosoda is the second transgender politician elected in Japan after Kamikawa Aya, a transgender woman who was elected as a Tokyo municipal official in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Hosoda officially changed his name and gender in the family registry in 2015 after having come out and transitioned.<\/p>\n<p>He has participated at various LGBTQ events and rook part in the <a href=\"http:\/\/outinjapan.com\/concept\/\" target=\"_blank\">Out in Japan campaign<\/a>, an initiative to highlight the presence of homosexual and trans people in Japan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dnd-widget-wrapper context-sdl_editor_representation type-gallery\">\n<div class=\"dnd-atom-rendered\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"container grid-mod-gallery\" data-scald-gallery=\"3906401\">\n<h2 class=\"gallery-title\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/outinjapan.com\/tomoya-hosoda\/\" target=\"_blank\">a\u00a0profile for Out in Japan<\/a>, Mr\u00a0Hosoda said: \u201cI thought that I could not be happy.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;But I remember to taking\u00a0my courage and deciding\u00a0to come out and hope to live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, coming out is just the starting line. Some walls can not be overcome by one person. But at such time, we have to work together and help each other out.
