{"id":6853,"date":"2017-03-21T13:01:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T07:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pahichan.com\/?p=6853"},"modified":"2017-03-21T13:03:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T07:18:52","slug":"youtube-apologizes-for-hiding-lgbtq-users-videos-in-its-restricted-mode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pahichan.com\/en\/youtube-apologizes-for-hiding-lgbtq-users-videos-in-its-restricted-mode\/","title":{"rendered":"YouTube apologizes for hiding LGBTQ users\u2019 videos in its Restricted Mode"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rich McCormick\/Kathmandu (Pahichan) March 21 &#8211;\u00a0YouTube has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YTCreators\/status\/843613347367079937\">released a statement<\/a> in response to accusations that it is discriminating against its LGBTQ users by <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/youtubes-restricted-mode-is-hiding-some-lgbt-content-1793382337\">hiding certain videos<\/a> in its Restricted Mode.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The company issued the statement on Sunday night, after several popular LGBTQ vloggers and video creators, discovered that videos on topics such as dating, attraction, and inspiration had been hidden by default in the mode. Many led criticism against the company using the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23YouTubeIsOverParty&amp;src=tyah\">#YouTubeIsOverParty hashtag<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"YQo2Id\">In the statement, which was put out via the YouTube Creators Twitter account, YouTube said that \u201cLGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be.\u201d A YouTube spokesperson clarified what these sensitive issues my be in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/mar\/20\/lgbt-community-anger-over-youtube-restrictions-which-make-their-videos-invisible\">statement to <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>, saying that while using Restricted Mode, videos \u201cthat cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"vaAVsa\">\n<div class=\"SandboxRoot env-bp-350\" data-twitter-event-id=\"0\">\n<div id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"EmbeddedTweet EmbeddedTweet--mediaForward media-forward js-clickToOpenTarget js-tweetIdInfo\" lang=\"en\" data-click-to-open-target=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YTCreators\/status\/843613347367079937\" data-iframe-title=\"Twitter Tweet\" data-dt-full=\"%{hours12}:%{minutes} %{amPm} - %{day} %{month} %{year}\" data-dt-months=\"Jan|Feb|Mar|Apr|May|Jun|Jul|Aug|Sep|Oct|Nov|Dec\" data-dt-am=\"AM\" data-dt-pm=\"PM\" data-dt-now=\"now\" data-dt-s=\"s\" data-dt-m=\"m\" data-dt-h=\"h\" data-dt-second=\"second\" data-dt-seconds=\"seconds\" data-dt-minute=\"minute\" data-dt-minutes=\"minutes\" data-dt-hour=\"hour\" data-dt-hours=\"hours\" data-dt-abbr=\"%{number}%{symbol}\" data-dt-short=\"%{day} %{month}\" data-dt-long=\"%{day} %{month} %{year}\" data-scribe=\"page:tweet\" data-tweet-id=\"843613347367079937\" data-twitter-event-id=\"3\">\n<article class=\"MediaCard MediaCard--mediaForward customisable-border\" dir=\"ltr\" data-scribe=\"component:card\">\n<div class=\"MediaCard-media\">\n<div class=\"MediaCard-widthConstraint js-cspForcedStyle\" data-style=\"max-width: 1200px\">\n<div class=\"MediaCard-mediaContainer js-cspForcedStyle\" data-style=\"padding-bottom: 59.5000%\">The criticism came after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/youtube-blocks-lgbtq-videos-restricted-mode?mbid=social_twitter\">several popular users<\/a> noted that some of their videos on same-sex relationships, crushes, and coming out were hidden when using Restricted Mode. British YouTuber Rowan Ellis was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zr6pS07mbJc\">one of the first<\/a> to address the concern in a video posted on Thursday, leading many other personalities to check into their own backlog, discovering that videos on a range of topics were removed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"O4R2MR\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"p-scalable-video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zr6pS07mbJc?wmode=transparent&amp;rel=0&amp;autohide=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"F7uU0V\">YouTube said that the mode was designed to filter out \u201cmature\u201d content, but the approach seemed to be scattershot in relation to LGBTQ users\u2019 videos. Popular personality Tyler Oakley \u2014 who has more than 8 million subscribers \u2014 noted that a video titled \u201c8 Black LGBTQ+ Trailblazers Who Inspire Me\u201d was rendered invisible in the mode, despite no obviously adult content in the video.
