Hartzler said, \u201cAt a time when we should be focusing on the threats from North Korea, and Putin, and ISIS, we\u2019re having to deal with a threat here at home\u200a\u2014\u200aa domestic threat\u200a\u2014\u200aof allowing transgenders in our service, which is a real problem because it impacts their readiness, and it\u2019s a huge cost for our military.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread\">\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-label\">She went on to say that the \u201ccost\u201d of transgender people serving in the military openly would be $1.35 billion, much greater than the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR1530.html\">$2.4 million to $8.4 million the RAND Corporation found in a study<\/a>. Those figures represent 0.04% to 0.13% of current military expenditures on health care.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is not the first time Hartzler has gotten attention for hateful comments about LGBTQ people. In 2011, she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2011\/06\/congresswoman-gay-marriage-would-lead-to-pedophiles-and-polygamists-marrying\/\">compared\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/tag\/gay-marriage\/\">same-sex marriage<\/a>\u00a0to pedophilia, arguing, \u201cWhy not allow an uncle to marry his niece? Why not allow a 50-year-old man to marry a 12-year-old girl if they love each other and they\u2019re committed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the\u00a0<em>Obergefell v. Hodges\u00a0<\/em>decision in 2015 that required states to allow all adult couples to marry, no state has passed a law allowing uncles and nieces to marry.
