Kathmandu (Pahichan) July 11 – Intersex advocates are rejoicing at a paper\u00a0released by three former US Surgeons General. The surgeon-generals called for an end to forced medical surgeries on young intersex people.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Dr Joycelyn Elders, Dr David Satcher and Dr Richard Carmona were the 15th to 17th Surgeons General respectively.<\/p>\n

A US Surgeon General\u00a0is the head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) and leading spokesperson on matters of federal public health in the United States.<\/p>\n

The three condemned genitoplasty and other procedures, which are often performed on infants with intersex traits.<\/p>\n

Intersex advocates, human rights groups and even the World Health Organization recognize \u2018corrective surgery\u2019 can cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n

The irreversible medical procedures are performed on infants or young children who cannot consent to the surgery.<\/p>\n

\u2018While we do not doubt that doctors who support and perform these surgeries have the best interests of patients and their parents at heart, our review of the available evidence has persuaded us that cosmetic infant genitoplasty is not justified absent a need to ensure physical functioning, and we hope that professionals and parents who face this difficult decision will heed the growing consensus that the practice should stop,\u2019 the three Surgeons General wrote in their paper.<\/p>\n

Oii USA (Organization Intersex International) said the paper was a \u2018stunning victory\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018This is an important win not just nationally but globally, as these harmful practices were pioneered in the United States, and U.S. medical institutions have been slow to question them and instrumental in exporting them throughout the world,\u2019\u00a0Oii USA said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Intersex activists across the globe have been calling for an end to medically unnecessary intersex infant surgeries\u2026 for over two decades.\u2019<\/p>\n

No surgery means happy babies<\/h2>\n

The paper comes as a new study revealed people who did not have forced surgery\u00a0grew up without predicted problems.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0French study found<\/a>\u00a0\u2018so far no major concerns have been reported from patients and their\u00a0families\u2019 and \u2018with appropriate medical care and psychological support, it is possible to defer genital surgery\u2019.<\/p>\n

Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Chile, Argentina and Malta have declared medical procedures are not necessary to ensure healthy physical functioning.<\/p>\n

In May, Portugal banned surgery on intersex babies.<\/a><\/p>\n

Surgeon says<\/h2>\n

The three Surgeons General called on doctors to wait until children were old enough to decide for themselves.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cosmetic genitoplasty should be deferred until children are old enough to voice their own view about whether to undergo the surgery,\u2019 the wrote.<\/p>\n

\u2018Those whose oath or conscience says \u2018do no harm\u2019 should heed the simple fact that, to date, research does not support the practice of cosmetic infant genitoplasty.\u2019<\/p>\n
