But this year is a little different: Donald Trump is president.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>Trump&#8217;s November victory over Hillary Clinton shook up the nation, and not just voters over age 18. When Trump won, the Democrats&#8217; push for college affordability at the federal level fell to the wayside, meaning that as the cost of higher education\u00a0continues to climb, schools&#8217; qualities are becoming more important than ever to prospective enrollees. For some people, that includes how students, professors and administrators treat LGBTQ students.<\/p>\n<h4>Related:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/college-value-critical-thinking-test-621671\">Is College Worth It?<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Bryn Mawr College, a women&#8217;s school in Pennsylvania, nabbed first place on the Princeton Review&#8217;s list of most LGBTQ-friendly schools in the company&#8217;s book\u00a0<em>The 382 Best Colleges<\/em>, out Tuesday. It was followed by the College of the Atlantic, a roughly 350-person institution in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Emerson College, which is located in Boston. Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, and\u00a0Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, rounded out the top five.<\/p>\n<p class=\"trial-link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/newsletter?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter-signup&amp;utm_medium=in-article-daily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily\u00a0<span class=\"highlight\">Emails and Alerts<\/span>\u00a0&#8211; Get the best of\u00a0<span class=\"highlight\">Newsweek<\/span>\u00a0delivered to your inbox<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bryn Mawr&#8217;s No. 1 status wasn&#8217;t surprising. It was ranked 15th on the Princeton Review&#8217;s list last year, which came after its 2015 decision to accept applications from transgender women.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we affirm Bryn Mawr\u2019s identity as a women\u2019s college, we do so knowing that our students, as well as other members of the community, will continue to explore, negotiate and\/or reject various concepts of gender,&#8221; the college&#8217;s president, Kim Cassidy, wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.blogs.brynmawr.edu\/2015\/02\/09\/a-letter-from-president-kim-cassidy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0at the time. &#8220;Indeed such critical engagement with social constructs is an important part of our educational purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The latest rankings, like all college-related lists, should be considered carefully alongside other results. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusprideindex.org\/searchresults\/display\/388208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Campus Pride Index<\/a>, for example, gives five-star ratings to schools like Rutgers University, the University of Washington and Tufts University for having resources for LGBTQ students and supportive housing, but none of those institutions\u00a0appear on the Princeton Review lineup.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the full list\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princetonreview.com\/college-rankings?rankings=lgbtq-friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>, but remember to be shrewd in evaluating your options and looking at inclusivity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Campuses today want to be called gay friendly,&#8221; Campus Pride founder Shane Windmeyer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3211813\/lgbt-gay-colleges-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told TIME<\/a>\u00a0in 2014. &#8220;They see they\u2019re going to lose students if they\u2019re not, [and] realize the pool of non-LGBT students is dwindling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Copy :\u00a0http:\/\/www.newsweek.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu (Pahichan) August 3 &#8211; College rankings come out every summer around this time as high school students prepare their applications and narrow down their lists.
