Kathmandu (Pahichan) February 11 – Five LGBTI people have revealed the difficulty they faced when they were homeless.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

At the Homelessness panel at National Student Pride, many people told their harrowing stories today (10 February).<\/p>\n

It comes as it was revealed one in four young homeless people are LGBT.<\/p>\n

Around 8,000 people slept rough in 2016 across the UK.<\/p>\n

Matthew, who now works for LGBT charity Galop, said he dealt with a client that knew the moment they had to leave.<\/p>\n

\u2018He had been beaten up by his neighbors in his own home. A bottle was smashed over his face,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018But he didn\u2019t go the police. He didn\u2019t want to engage with them. A week after that, he rang up and said he didn\u2019t have a place to go.<\/p>\n

\u2018When I told him that a shelter can be a very difficult place to be LGBT, I didn\u2019t hear from him for two months.\u2019<\/p>\n

Matthew said he tried to go to the homeless unit but was stopped because he was HIV positive.<\/p>\n

Bridie, who lives in Newcastle, was forced to leave his home by his stepdad. He dealt with domestic abuse and family illness.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019d spend weeks on end at a friend\u2019s house,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s not a good way to live. Nobody should feel like they have to lie to their parents.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018I now live in an Albert Kennedy Trust property.\u2019<\/p>\n

Anira, a trans woman, came from Denmark to London. But due to not being able to keep a job, she couch-surfed for months.<\/p>\n

\u2018People would take pictures and film me,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was just outside, trying to spend my time out and about. It was rude.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018It was unacceptable to be trans [in my family]\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A trans guy from a Pakistani-Iranian family, who was not named at the panel, lost his father when he was young.<\/p>\n

From a very young age, he knew he was not a girl. One time, he cut his plaits off to the shock of his mother.<\/p>\n

At 15, his mother died. And while his mother wasn\u2019t accepting of his gender identity, the aunt that took him in was worse.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was unacceptable to be trans,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018We had a lot of arguments and fights\u2026 I felt invalidated.\u2019<\/p>\n

Carla, a outreach worker, said she had dealt with domestic abuse that led her to staying with friends for six months.<\/p>\n

For some people there\u2019s one damaging situation,\u2019 she said. saying she felt like she was \u2018broken down by different experiences\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018People have this idea\u00a0 if you\u2019re homeless you\u2019re in a doorway. Most people who are couch-surfing don\u2019t think of themselves as homeless.<\/p>\n

\u2018There are people who live in those clubs and bars and go home to different people every night.<\/p>\n

\u2018Those people are still homeless.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s just more risk being visibly out in the street.\u2019<\/p>\n
