Kathmandu (Pahichan) April 8 – According to WHO,\u00a050% of the world lacks access to essential health services<\/strong>\u00a0and 100 million people globally are pushed into poverty trying to cover healthcare costs. Today, on World Health Day,\u00a0we call upon world leaders to commit to advancing health for all by moving towards Universal Health Coverage<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>UHC), as pledged in the Sustainable Development Goals<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>SDG) 2<\/span>030 Agenda<\/span>. This will ensure that everyone, everywhere can access quality health services without facing financial hardship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The term\u00a0\u2018<\/span>universal\u2019<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0\u2018<\/span>Universal Health Coverage\u2019 means\u00a0\u201c<\/span>for all\u201d, without discrimination,\u00a0yet trans, gender diverse and intersex people<\/span>, among others\u00a0<\/span>globally,<\/span>\u00a0face social and institutionalized discrimination daily.\u00a0<\/strong>This discrimination affects all areas of life<\/span>. It<\/span>\u00a0includ<\/span>es<\/span>\u00a0social\u00a0<\/span>stigma<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 which can lead to bullying, harassment and violence \u2013 and restricts<\/span>\u00a0access to healthcare, housing, education and employment.\u00a0<\/span>Structural and systemic discrimination has an increased impact upon people of color, indigenous communities, sex workers, drug users, migrants, those in prison, homeless individuals and\/or those living in extreme poverty, and D\/deaf, disabled and neuro-diverse individuals.<\/strong>\u00a0For example, sex work is criminalized in many regions of the world, resulting in a higher likelihood of experiencing violence, poverty and refusal of healthcare access. People of color, indigenous communities and migrants face additional oppression due to racism, colonialism and the normalization of whiteness in Western societies.<\/span><\/p>\n

This systemic neglect and intersectional discrimination results in high levels of poverty within, among others,<\/span>\u00a0the global trans, gender diverse<\/span>\u00a0and intersex communities.\u00a0<\/strong>Trans and gender diverse individuals face widespread violence and lack of access to basic healthcare<\/span>. When<\/span>\u00a0combined with the increasing rates of HIV infection in trans communities due to lack of primary prevention,\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>places them at a significant disadvantage when compared to the rest of the population<\/span>.\u00a0Furthermore, access to trans-specific healthcare is currently pathologized<\/span>\u00a0in most parts of the world<\/span>, burdening trans individuals with<\/span>\u00a0\u2018<\/span>proving\u2019 their gender prior to gaining access to transition-related healthcare.<\/span>\u00a0Intersex individuals face persistent human rights violations perpetrated against them in medical settings, which often aggravates ongoing health conditions while consequentially making access to further healthcare challenging or impossible.<\/p>\n

In order to ensure that Universal Health Coverage is achieved, all communities must be included in providing health for all. Involving trans, gender diverse and intersex communities in the design, development and practice of improving healthcare access is fundamental to promoting real change.\u00a0<\/strong>This must be combined with the implementation of laws and policies that target systemic and institutionalized discrimination against these communities<\/span>. For instance, transition-related<\/span>\u00a0healthcare must be depathologized so that being trans is no longer treated as a mental illness and trans people are free to make their own decisions about the healthcare that is right for them.<\/span>\u00a0It is also essential to end forced and coercive medical interventions on\u00a0people with intersex variations in all stages of life<\/span>\u00a0and to recognize their right to bodily integrity and self-determination.<\/p>\n

A commitment to Universal Health Coverage is a commitment to promoting inclusion and equality and ending human rights violations against trans, gender diverse and intersex people.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
