Challenging govt to legalize same-sex marriage, Surendra and Maya tied knot (Video)

Kathmandu (Pahichan) October 15 – Posing a serious challenge to government to legalize same-sex marriage at the earliest, Surendra Pandey and Ram Gurung (Maya) of Nawalparsi tied the knot. Surendra is 22 years old and Ram Gurung (Maya) is 35 years old.  Surendra was identifying himself as a homosexual and Ram as a third gender women. Both married in Kathmandu’s Siddhi Ganesh Mandir with Panche baja. Both asked others to come out and give their identity.

Siddhi Ganesh Tol Sudhar Samiti Chair RB Thakuri served as a guardian said he feels happy to help both to marry. Both pledged to knock the door of government to take steps to legalize same-sex marriage. This is the first time that Tol Sudhar has arranged such marriage.

Thakuri said that such marriage would help to create social awareness to create a favorable public opinion about this community. Both said that their marriage would send out a possible message in the society so that coming generation would not have to live their live concealing their identity.

“There are not only male and female in the society, there are third gender like us,” Maya said, “There are not any differences among us.” They said family members should understand their spirit. Surendra is an only one in their family. Surendra’s sister has not accepted.

Surendra’s mother and father have already died so they have invited their aunty to come in marriage ceremony. Maya, however, said her mother has given her consent. Priest Krishna Prasad Timalsena said there are no differences in the marriage between male-female and homosexual-third gender. Supreme Court in 2064 had ordered government to formulate laws legalizing same-sex marriage.
