‘Docs need training to treat LGBTI’

Kathmandu (Pahichan), October 27 -Health experts have underscored the need of special training to the doctors for delivering easy health service to LGBTI people. Speaking at an interaction organised by the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), they stressed that doctors should understand the sentiments of LGBTI people before treating them .

Dr. Shushil Shakya of Bir Hospital said LGBTI people are experiencing difficulties to get medical treatment as they have been hiding their identity due to the fear of social stigma. “Though, the policy says there shall be no discrimination but practically, LGBTI people are still being discriminated in the society,” he argued.

According to him, the third gender people try to hide their identity as some of the doctors frequently ask them about their sexuality ‘just for a fun’. “Those doctors need training,” he added.

Public Health Section officer of Lalitpur Submetropolitan City Karuna Bajracharya, suggested BDS to conduct such training or mobilise volunteers to train health workers.

Manoranjan Kumar Baidhya, programme officer of Parichaya Samaj, emphasised on the implementation of the National Health Policy to end the discrimination. Tara Bhattarai of Nepal Red Cross Society informed that they have started training for Red-Cross employee about LGBTI people.
