USAID to launch 90-90-90 program targeting homosexual and transgender

Kathmandu (Pahichan) January 11 – USAID has decided to launch programs in 16 districts targeting homosexual and transgender who are in high risk of HIV infection and AIDS. The name of program is 90-90-90 which aims to keep homosexual and transgender away from the risks. It also plans providing treatment to affected people, according Ivhan Lohar, representatives of USAID.

Under the project which will be launched by National HIV AIDS and Prevention Center plans to reach out to 90 vulnerable homosexual and transgender at a time. The USAID representatives held discussions with the stakeholder for the operation of program.

According to Parshuram Rai, Deputy Director at Blue Diamond Society, project will be implemented at Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kaski, Jhapa, Sunsari, Morang, Kailai, Kanchanpur, Accham, Doti, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Chitwan, Nawalparsi and Banke.

The program will be conducted from October 2016 to February 2018 and preparations will begin from this March. A USAID report has identified that members of this community are in vulnerable situation and 18 month campaign is going to be launched, said Lohar.

In comparison to male and female, homosexual and transgender are more vulnerable to HIV infection. Government has not legalized same-sex marriage. Similarly, family has not accepted this community. As members of this community are engaged in sex trade they are in vulnerable situation.
