Quixote’s Cove is a bookshop committed to establishing a vibrant literary culture in Nepal. It offers literary and art event management services, creative writing classes, book supply chain services and library development services. The Word Warriors, a spoken word poetry collective, was born out of a poetry slam organized by Quixote’s Cove in December 2010 (QC Awards 2010) in Kathmandu. Since its inception, the Word Warriors have been taking the spoken word poetry movement forward in Nepal through events, workshops, slams and projects.
Spoken word poetry is a performance based recital of original poetry. The poetry can cover any topic and is open to different style and techniques. It is a powerful form of creative expression, which gives youth an opportunity and an outlet to present their voice.
The modern-day and competitive aspect to spoken word poetry is known as a poetry slam. Participating poets perform their original works at a poetry slam. These performances are judged by a panel of judges. The judges score on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being the lowest, ten being the highest). The highest and lowest scores are dropped and the remaining three are added to give the final score of the poet.
Since 2010, five regional slams have been organized out of which three of them were held in Kathmandu (QC Awards 2010, 2013 and 2015), one in Surkhet (QC Awards 2013: Slamming in Surkhet) and one in Jhapa (Jhapa Slam 2017). Recently, in 2016, we organized a national poetry slam that featured teams representing eight districts: Kathmandu, Kavre, Chitwan, Kaski, Lalitpur, Surkhet, Illam and Kailali.
After such successful events, Quixote’s Cove together with the Word Warriors is now organizing QC Awards 2017. This slam builds upon the workshops and performances the Word Warriors have conducted in various schools and colleges. The Word Warriors have already visited numerous schools, colleges and organizations with visiting spoken word poets as well as collectively as a group. Based on the positive feedback we have received in the previous years, we expect the contest to draw a lot of attention.
The contest will take part in five phases with the objective of training and selecting the best performance poets for the final contest. Applicants will participate in an intensive preparatory workshop conducted by the Word Warriors. They will then take part in the final competition after going through a round of auditions. The contest will be multilingual; giving students the option of working in the language they are most comfortable with; however, the organizers must be pre-informed if they are choosing a language other than Nepali and English.
The contest is open for all participants between the ages of 15 to 22. Participants will have to fill up forms by the deadline to be eligible to take part.
About 80 applicants will be shortlisted to take part in a one day workshop with the Word Warriors. The workshop is designed to improve participants’ written poetry as well as to hone their performance skills.
After the workshop, shortlisted participants will take part in an audition to secure a place in the final contest. The participants will be judged by a panel comprising people from different fields including literature, journalism and education. A total of 20 final contestants will be selected.
Participants selected for the finals will be assigned a coach. One-on-one or small group coaching session will be held leading up the final slam.
The contest will be held in two rounds and the top five poets shall be selected by a panel of five judges.
