High rate of suicide dismays LGBTI community

Kathmandu (Pahichan) July 10 – A Transgender woman Muna Rai has committed a suicide. She was living in Kathmandu Metropolitan coity-7 Gaurighat. The suicide came as a surprise and matter of concerns for the transgender rights activist Sanjaya Tamang who is working in Blue Diamond Society.

According to police official Anupam Shrestha, Rai was found hanging in her rented room. Shrestha informed that dead body has been sent to Teaching Hospital for the postmortem.

 Shrestha said detail information will come out after the postmortem is over. This is not the first case of suicide from LGBTI community. In this month alone, two homosexual male committed suicide, and reasons behind it is yet to be ascertained.

The growing suicide rates have dismayed the members of this community. Members of this community are seeking equal right along with other social security measures. Members of this community are yet to receive social, political and other rights.

Though the rights of this community are mentioned in the constitution, it remains largely unimplemented. They are pressing the political parties to implement their rights as mentioned in the constitution.
