Kathmandu (Pahichan) August 21 – Members of sexual and gender minority have said that incidents of abuse and manhandling to this community are increasing. They said such accidents are occurring mainly in night time.
Few days back, transgender Tina Rai who is working as make-up artist was attacked by police. She was beaten when there was a minor dispute in the restaurant with her friends while having snacks with her friends.
There were some strains in her body when police beat her. “I was attacked without any reasons and without knowing the actual reasons. Instead of providing treatment, I was taken to police beat,” Rai said.
Not only Tina, other members who are working in Restaurant are facing various problems. Bhakti Shah who is working in Blue Diamond Society said innocent people are being beaten in recent days.
According to the data of BDS, altogether 116 complaints were registered from January to August this year which shows the increasing rate of violence to this community. According to Shah, 50 percent people were totally innocent. According to Shah, members of this community are unnecessarily teased and mishandled while walking in the street.
“Though constitution has provided rights to the members of this community, the mindset of society and people remains unchanged,” said Shah. The Civil and Criminal code which came into operation from August 15 clearly states that if any members of minority group are abused, there will be punishment. With the implementation of these codes there are hopes that members of this community will feel save when they walk in the street.
