No formal celebration of Intersex Awareness Day in Nepal

Kathmandu (Pahichan) October 28 – Intersex Awareness Day was observed on October 26, 2018. Intersex Awareness Day is an internationally observed civil awareness day designed to highlight the challenges faced by intersex individuals.

The day was confined in the social media this year. The message of inter-sex day was circulated through social media and there was not any formal celebration.

In some countries, the day was celebrated organizing some programs, according to inter-sex rights activist Ishan Regmi.  United Nations began to raise the issue of this community since 2015. According to latest data, there 40 inter-sex people in Nepal. “State must take initiations to celebrate this day and provide special rights. At the same time, initiations should be taken to remove social stigma,” said Regmi.

Regmi said inter-sex people are compelled to face discrimination sine their birth. Inter-sex people Pushpa Chaudhary who received support from family is going to participate in international race competition.

Currently, she is receiving training. Chaudhary is reading in grade nine and she is living with a fear that she could be denied to participate in the program due to her gender identity.
