Call to ensure rights of LGBTI in new constitution

Kathmandu (Pahichan) December 12 –  National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Anup Raj Sharma has stressed that rights of transgender people should be ensured along with men and women in new constitution.

Laying emphasis on timely delivery of human rights-friendly statutes, he also called for an end to all types of discrimination against sexual minorities.IMG_20141210_092006369

Speaking to Pahichan online following an event organised at Kathmandu on the occasion of of 66th International Human Rights Day, NHRC chair Sharma said poor implementation of existing laws is the problem of the time.

He also informed that NHRC, after making a six-year strategic plan, will make public the record of those who do not emplement the recommendation of NHRC.

Speaking at the programme, LGBTI rights activist Bhumika Shrestha also urged lawmakers to ensure rights of sexual minorities in new constitution. She, on behalf of LGBTI people, shared her experiences and said they were still deprived of human rights in many ways. Sexual and gender minorities should not be deprivde of any forms of economical, social and cultural rights, according to her.

President of Blue Diamond society, Pinky Gurung, also wished for timly delivery of gender-friendly constitution.
