EC faces legal hurdles to ensure the representation of LGBTI

Kathmandu (Pahichan) May 2 – Chief  Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav has said that EC is facing difficulties to ensure therepresentation gender and sexual minority. This is happening, according to them, as members of this community are not listed as minority group in the law. He said EC will hold the election as per the law formulated by Parliament that is why it is facing difficulties.

“The community which has the population of  0.5 has been enlisted as minority but gender and sexual minority are not enlisted,” Yadav said adding that EC is facing difficulties to ensure the representation of this community. He said though EC is working to ensure the representation of this community, legal framework is not sufficient to do so.

“After the members of this community drew the attention, we have incorporated transgender in gendersection along with male and female,” Yadav said. Only 143 voters have given their  identity. This happened due to the citizenship.  He suggested the members of this community to establish themselves through open competition.  He said there has been progress in inclusion.

Chairman of Blue Diamond Society Pinky Gurung said that EC should work for the welfare of gender and sexual minority. She submitted a memorandum of understanding.  This is the first time that EC held discussions with members of gender and sexual minority.

Gurung said members of this community are playing a vital role in all political changes.  Secretary at EC Gopi Nath Mainali aid that members of this community can file their candidacy in the election.  He said EC failed to reserve this community.
