International Day observed with rainbow flag rising

Lalitpur (Pahichan) May 18 – An International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia has been observed organizing a special program at United Nations Office Pulchowk.

The program was jointly organized by United Nations and Blue Diamond Society. Rainbow flag raising ceremony was the central attraction of the program. The theme of the program was ‘Love Makes a Family and love gender and sexual minority. This day is being celebrated since 2004.

The rainbow flag raising was jointly inaugurated by Miss Pink Ani Lama, Mr Gay Bisoraj Adhikari, Miss Pink Raj Husen and senior artist Santosh Pant.  In 1990, World Health Organization of United Nation has declared that being a homosexual and transgender are not a disease but a natural character.

The WHO also delisted this from the category of disease. Speaking in the program, Minister for Women, Children and Social Ram Kumar Khadka said Nepal is among the new countries that has cemented the constitutional rights of gender and sexual minority.

“The process of preparing a draft of law is underway to establish the rights of LGBTI,” said Khadka. Khadka said Nepal has set an example when it comes to providing the rights to gender and sexual minority.  Chairman of Blue Diamond Society Pinky Gurung said the constitutional rights of gender and sexual minority has been established. Gurung said BDS has built a reputation of marking the day with global organization United Nations.

She said it is matter of pride that Nepal is a progressive country in ensuring the rights of gender and sexual minority.  In the program United Nations Resident Coordinator Valerie Julliand provided welcome remarks.
