Meet Three Same-Sex Couples Who Just Want You To Vote “Yes”

Kathmandu (Pahichan) September 24 – If you needed one more reason to vote Yes in the marriage equality postal survey, let this be it. This beautiful short film, For Better, was put together by Sydney-based Creative Partnership, Brand+Story.

Created by Josh Whiteman and Paul Chappell, the beautifully simple film features gay couples in long-term relationships talking about their hopes for the right to marry.

The three couples are Bill and Andrew, who have been together for 27 years, have three children and two grandchildren, Dawn and Robin, who have been together for 34 years, and Neville and Ian, who have been together for 40 years. Nevill is 97.

The video features the three couples talking about how they met, their lives together and why they want to get married. It turns out, they’re just like every other loving couple.

“It’s important to make that final step, and may we continue this lifelong partnership,” says Ian in the video.

“That’s nice, isn’t it,” Neville responds.

Honestly if this doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, nothing will.

Whiteman describes the campaign as “a small contribution to the incredible work Australian Marriage Equality and other organisations have done on this important issue.”

“Our approach was to engage borderline No Voters with stories of older couples who have been together in long-term, committed relationships. Many people in the Queer community hold ‘traditional’ views on marriage, believing it’s meant to celebrate long term commitment, protect children and provide stability. These views disarm many of the ‘No’ arguments.”

“So what initially appears as a message from the ‘No’ side soon reveals itself to be a moving exploration of these couples’ desire to marry and enjoy all that comes along with that. We dearly hope the film shows that voting ‘Yes’ will lead to a better world for everyone.”

Paul Chappell said “We’re incredibly grateful for the support of the crew and Post Partners who donated their time and services to make this happen. When I think about Neville at 97 years old, desperate to marry his partner of almost 40 years, we really need to get this done.”
