Kathmandu (Pahichan) October 2 – Chairman of Blue Diamond Society Pinky Gurung has said that family members used to enquire when they used to celebrate Dashain festival disclosing their gender identity. “It was a surprise for some people, while others used to tease me.
Now, I celebrate Dashain in a normal way,” said Gurung. Gurung said many members of gender and sexual minority are not getting opportunities to celebrate as Society is not accepting them.
She said individual himself\herself are responsible to convince the family members. “Constitution has already accepted this community and laws are being formulated accordingly. Society is also gradually accepting this community.
Earlier this was taken as social stigma; now it has been feature of society,” said Gurung. She suggested the members of this community to celebrate Dashain disclosing their identity.
The citizenship name of Pinky is Sanjeeb Gurung. However, she is not known as Sanjeeb. She does not entertain in this name. She is preparing to get citizenship as per the verdict made by Supreme Court. “Soon after Dashain festival is over, I am preparing to take citizenship as per the SC verdict. I have not gone to court with a view that verdict has not reached court,” said Gurung.
Gurung is actively involved in politics. She is Secretariat member of Naya Shaki Nepal led by Baburam Bhattarai. She joined politics with a view that it would help to cement the agenda of gender and sexual minority. “Every issue is linked with politics. Our rights are enshrined in the constitution,” said Gurung.
