BDS organizes training for journalists in Pokhara, Our achievement is due to the support of Media: Dhakal

Kaski (Pahichan) January 7 – With a purpose of enhancing the capacity of journalist, Blue Diamond Society organized two-day media training for the journalist writing on sexual and gender minority issues. The program was organized in Pokhara.

Addressing the inaugural session, Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society Manisha Dhakal said it is due to the media that BDS has made a progress in the establishing the rights of this community.

She said it is due to the media many LGBTI movements in the world are failing but in Nepal media is supporting this community. “We have conquered Mt. Everest due to the support from media community,” said Dhakal. The training program was attended by more than one doze journalist from across the country.  They are writing on various issues related to LGBTI.

Addressing the program, Editor of Pahichan Online Madhav Dulal said the role of media is very important in establishing the rights of LGBTI. “Pahichan is raising the issues related to gender and sexual minority and we are planning to expand it in the future days,” Dulal said. Participants in the program shared the problems they are facing while reporting on LGBTI issues.  They said that people from various sectors are not ready to talk about this issue.

Advocate Sujan Pant shed light on the legal and constitutional rights of LGBTI. He also shared international experiences and rights ensured by new constitution adopted in 2015. Journalist Rames Wagle informed journalists on possible issues of LGBTI in the grass-root level. He presented in details about the functioning of local levels as per the constitution.
