Govt hints to formulate same-sex marriage law

Kathmandu (Pahichan) March 3 – Government has hinted to initiate process of formulation of law on same-sex marriage. With a commitment to push a same-sex marriage report ahead, there are indications of formulation of same-sex marriage. A seven-member committee had submitted a report which has recommended legalizing same-sex marriage.

In a meeting with a team of Blue Diamond society, Secretary at Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare Naindra Prasad Upadhyay expressed such commitment.

BDS met him to ask to implement the result and ease the process of providing citizenship on the basis of identity.  In the meeting Chairman Pinky Gurung and transgender Right Activist Bhumika Sherstha said tough they were born as male, they are now female.

With this introduction, Upadhyay said it is the first time; he came to know about transgender. The Secretary assured that he will take initiations with Ministry of Home Affairs to provide citizenship to this community without any obstacles.

They requested to ensure citizenship for this community as per article 12 and Supreme Court order. The BDS has also made a request to Ministry of Home Affairs to ease the process of acquiring citizenship.

The BDS has also submitted full verdict of Supreme Court order to Ministry. Legal Advisor of BDS and Advocate Sujan Panta it is unfortunate that despite the court order and constitutional rights, members of this community are not receiving citizenship easily.

Under Secretary at Ministry Bharat Sharma said Ministry is positive about implementing the report. He confessed that there has been delay in implementation of commission. “I have told either to implement it or forward it to other agencies but no one is paying attention to my voices,” Sharma said.
