Kathmandu (Pahichan) March 17 – LGBTI community has said that they are being denied from marriage rights as government is delaying to formulate laws as per the constitutional provisions. It has been more than a decade since Supreme Court issued an order asking government to make a law to legalize same-sex marriage there has not been any progress on it. Government has said that it would take some time to legalize same-sex marriage.
Ani Lama (24) years said she want to marry. Though Lama has already met a friend to marry, they are living together without marriage. She said, “Every woman have interest to marry and give a birth to children. I have the same feeling. If we get the right to marry, we will adopt children,” said Lama.
A government committee formed to suggest ways for legalizing same-sex marriage is gathering dust at Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare. Bharat Sharma said if laws are formulated as per Supreme Court ruling, it cannot accommodate all sections of society. Members of this community have blamed that government is not ready to legalize same-sex marriage.
Chairman of Blue Diamond Society Pinky Gurung said if government wises it is not difficult to legalize same-sex marriage. “If equal rights are provided two people, it will address the problems of all people,” Gurung said. Nepal is regarded as a progressive country when it comes to ensuring the rights of gender and sexual minority. In the previous CA, Sunil Babu Pant became lawmaker from this community.
