Local governments urged to allocate budget for LGBTI community

Rautahat (Pahichan) April 11 – Members of sexual and gender minority have demanded to allocate budget for them. Saptarangi Nepal, Rautahat, district chapter of Blue Diamond Society, made such demand with local government. Neha Pattel informed that Chandrapur Municipality had allocated 20 thousand budgets in 2009.

“After that, there has not been any allocation of budget by local levels targeting this community,” said Pattel. In the initial days, the office was barred to distribute condoms of with a purpose of preventing HIV AIDS. Now, there are not restrictions like in the past but we are still facing abusive words, Pattel said. If policies and program were prepared targeting this community, she said it would be easy to disclose the identity.

Program Coordinator Suraj Limbu said 5 hundred transgender and 8 hundred homosexual have disclosed their identity. She expected a special program from government saying that same-sex marriage should be legalized.
