A rally calls for death penalty to rapists

Kathmandu (Pahichan) April 18 – A protest was organized by Rakhsya Nepal against rape in New Baneshor. The protest which started from New Baneshwor was concluded in Maitihar Mandala. Participants in the rally called for death penalty for rapists.

Sabitri Subedi from Rakshya Nepal asserted that until and unless there is a provision of death penalty, the rape cases will not come down.  She has been working to assist rape survivors in Terai districts.  Rape survivors face social exclusion and criminals have political protection. Many times rape victims are bought money, while most of them are Dalit, poor and marginalized groups whose vulnerability is exploited.

Members from Blue Diamond Society also participated in the rally where they raised the issue of narrow definition of rape. Rape has been defined as only by a man to woman which excludes many kinds of rape and this does not allow other kind of rape victims to get legal remedies.
