Govt’s policy and programs misses to take up LGBTI issues

Kathmandu (Pahichan) May 21 – Government has said that it is fully committed to uplift the marginalized community. Presenting government’s policy and program in Parliament, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari said government is firm to uplift the status of marginalized community. Government, however, has not defined the word marginalized community.

It is also not clear whether President is talking about gender and sexual minority which is lagging behind. The community has not received any support from government and donor agencies are also not providing expected support. The President said all the human beings will get equal rights, opportunity and respect.

The program says, “Government backs social justice and equality. Ending all sorts of discrimination and injustice would be the main priority of government.”

The policy and program commits to end all types of social discrimination and stigma. The policy further states that child marriage; witch, Chhaupadi, social discrimination and other forms of discrimination will come to end.

The policy and program, however, has not mentioned about the gender and sexual minority, and it is not sure budget will address this community.

Earlier, on Bhaishak 31, Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada had indicated to accommodate this community. Khatiwada had mentioned about senior citizen, marginalized community, transgender and other community.

The left alliance had not mentioned about this community in its election manifesto.
