Regional Meeting on Empowerment and Capacity Development for Parents of LGBTI Persons concludes

Kathmandu (Pahichan) August 29 – The Regional Meeting on Empowerment and Capacity Development for Parents of LGBTI Persons in Asia took place from 24-25 August 2018. The program was attended by parents organizing and LGBTI community groups from 9 Asian countries.

Stories of parents who do not only love their children regardless of their sex, gender and sexuality, but also spend years and years advocating for a more inclusive society and justice for their LGBTI children were shared in the program.

The stories have proved that family values aren’t about correcting your children when they belong to gender and sexual minorities, nor when they don’t conform to sex and gender norms. Family values aren’t about excluding family members who are LGBTI, according to participants.

Family is about love and acceptance. Family has been at the core of Asian values that have been promoted by Asian governments for decades, and this message of love and acceptance within the family must be spread, participants said.

The meeting was organized in partnership with ICS Center, UNDP in Asia and the Pacific, Being LGBTI in Asia, Faculty of Learning Sciences and Education – Thammasat University, Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City. There was also presence of  PFLAG China, Sweekar – The Rainbow Parents, សហគមន៍ឥន្ទធនូកម្ពុជា Rainbow Community Kampuchea-rock, 성소수자 부모모임 – PFLAG Korea, Cộng đồng PFLAG.vn, 同志父母愛心協會 Loving Parents of LGBT, Taiwan, PFLAG-Myanmar-LGBTIQAs SOS Hotline, BlueDiamondSociety, Naz Pakistan, UNDP Việt Nam, Save the Children in Vietnam.
