BIMSTEC Fourth Summit begins

Kathmandu (Pahichan) August 30 – The fourth summit conference of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is taking place amidst a special ceremony.

Prime Minister and BIMSTEC Chair KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inaugurate the Summit. Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bhutan and Chief Justice, Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of Myanmar, Win Myint, President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha are attending the Summit.

All other dignitaries except the Thai Prime Minister have already arrived in Kathmandu for the BIMSTEC Fourth Summit.  The Summit will conclude on Friday by issuing the Kathmandu Declaration. Sri Lanka will take over the BIMSTEC Chair with the wrapping up of the Fourth Summit.

BIMSTEC was established in 1997 with a view of promoting regional cooperation. Members countries are signing a MoU on grid connectivity among the seven countries which will pave the way for power cooperation.
