Home Minister vows special programmes against VAW

Kathmandu (Pahichan) September 18 – Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has announced to introduce special programmes from the side of government to reduce the cases of violence against women (VAW) including rape.

During a meeting with the National Human Rights Commission Chairman Anupraj Sharma-led team on Monday, Minister Thapa said that the government has taken the reported cases of VAW and rapes seriously. “Consumption of alcohol, drugs and misuse of internet have resulted in VAW and rape cases. The ministry has tightened their usage,” he said.

Saying that the rape and subsequent murder of Nirmala Panta of Kanchanpur has saddened him, the Home Minister pledged to bring the culprits of the case to book. He added that six police personnel have been suspended for their sheer negligence in the investigation process and shared that additional investigation teams have been deployed.

Minister Thapa claimed that donation drive, explosions, robbery and smuggling have been slashed after he took charge of home ministry and urged the Commission to extend support in his actions.

During the discussion, Commission’s Chairman Sharma inquired about the investigation of Kanchanpur case and lamented the poor role of the police personnel in the investigation.
