Marriage rights should be addressed by law

Rupandehi (Pahichan) May 9 – Representatives of local government have expressed their commitment to address the issues of sexual and gender minority through a collective effort. Speaking at a program organized by Federation of Sexual and Gender minority in Butwal they made commitment to introduce awareness campaign.

Mahendra Legal, chair of Butwal sub-metropolitan city ward 1 said that they will bring programs targeting gender and sexual minority. Tanka Parajuli of ward no. 4 chair said he would work to bring a change in people’s mindset towards sexual and gender minority. Kamal Pratap Thapa of ward 7 chair said though members of this community are facing a lot of problems, the bureaucracy does not have the attitude of resolving their problems.

Chair of Federation and Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society Manisha Dhakal said law should address the marriage rights of sexual and gender minority. She further added that though law has provided rights to this community, there are a lot of practical difficulties. Vice-chair of Federation Bhumika Shrestha urged to cancel the provisions which have made it mandatory to produce medical report to get citizenship.

Journalist Binod Pahadi said though law has ensured the rights of this community, there are the problems related to its implementation. He said all three levels of government should be serious to address the problem. Chair of Eklo Lai Sahara Dine Brikshya Aanik Rana said that as citizenship issue is related to identity, the process of acquiring citizenship should be made easy.
