Kathmandu : ‘Nilo Phool’ (Blue Flower) a movie based on a true story 20 years ago, has been released. The producer and director is no other than Sunil Babu Pant, the first openly gay politician of Nepal as well as a LGBTIQ right activist.
It is based on the life a of a gay man who was forced to marry a woman. The movie, according to Pant, reflects on how Nepali society has been treating people belonging to LGBTIQ community within the past years.
It also sheds some light on how Nepali government has yet not legalized same sex marriage.
The story, which is rare case in South Asia, done justice to the lgbtiq characters on a dignified and positive manner, highlighting forced heterosexual marriage, huge pressure to have a son, bullying and Unforgiving rural environment of Nepal and eventually forced to migrate for scape to avoid dangers.
Pant hopes that this movie will open much needed debate on forced marriage of LGBTQI people and their rights as well as their defacto spouses.
Hope Sagar Ghimire, who is debuting in the film, says it was an honour to start his career from this movie. ‘I did this film because this very human story, but has been hidden purposefully by the society.
Its time the society openly debate this issues. And i am hopping this movie will open doors to other opportunity in the future’he adds.
