Record-setter Nima Rinji achieves his 13th 8000’er with summit of Kangchenjunga

Kathmandu : Nepalese climber Nima Rinji Sherpa has set a record by becoming the youngest person in the world to climb Kangchenjunga at the age of 18 this morning.

He alongside a team of eight climbers, including the Sherpas, reached the top of the world’s third highest mountain at 8586 metres, at 9:30 am, confirmed Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, Managing Director of Seven Summit Treks (SST), a leading Nepal-based expedition operator.

With this historic achievement, Nima Rinji has achieved his 13th 8000’er, and is now aiming to complete all 14 peaks above 8000 metres and claim the youngest record. Now only Shishapangma remains for him to complete his 14th 8000’er.

Nima Rinji previously set many records. Last year he became the youngest person in the world to climb Mt. K2 and youngest person to complete the Everest-Lhotse traverse at the age of 17 years.

Nima Rinji, from Makalu in Sankhuwasabha district, is the youngest son of record holding climber, Tashi Lakpa. Tashi Lakpa, also Chairperson of 14 Peaks Expedition, set a world record becoming the youngest climber to scale Mt Everest without bottled oxygen at the age of 19.

The team of nine climbers, including Nima Rinji, achieved the remarkable feat as part of the Seven Summit Treks 14 Peak Expedition, marking the last successful summit of the season in Nepal, said SST’s General Manager Thaneswar Guragai.

“Our team will be engaged further in climbing the five Pakistani 8000ers this summer.”
