New constitution has ensured the rights of sexual and gender minority: Thapa

Kathmandu (Pahichan) October 8 – Nepali Congress lawmaker Gagan Thapa has said that it is a matter of pride that new constitution has ensured the rights of gender and sexual minorities. Speaking to Pahichan Radio program, very few countries have ensured such rights for the gender and sexual minority and Nepal is one of them.

“We have presented an example that how liberal is our country,” Thapa said.  “There is a gap between past and present, the rights of gender and sexual minority has received momentum,” said Thapa.

Thapa is Chairperson of Parliament’s Agriculture and Water Resources Committee. “The new constitution has brought a minority community into mainstream,” said Thapa adding that it is a matter of pride. He said problems have been created after India imposed blockade after the promulgation of new constitution and it has affected the implementation of constitution. “At a time when there are discussions inside the country about the rights of Madhesi, Tharu, Janajati and other constituencies, India suggested stopping the CA process but it was not possible to do so,” Thapa said.
