Kathmandu, (Pahichan) November 8 – Sweden, Canada, Brazil and Israel have welcomed Nepal’s constitution asking Nepal government to implement constitution in a way that would protect the human rights of LGBT, and minorities. They expressed happiness in the meeting of Universal Periodic Review.
Sweden has recommended that the government of Nepal take the necessary steps to ensure that the new constitution is implemented while protecting human rights and thus ensuring its provisions on gender equality, LGBT, and minorities.
In the Universal Periodic Review, Spain noted that the new constitution refers specifically to the rights of LGBT persons.
“This is a historic landmark that is an example to other countries of Asia. Spain recommends that specific mechanisms be established to investigate and punish possible cases of discrimination against LGBT persons particularly in their relations with the administration,” Spain said.
Similarly, Brazil recommends that Nepal take measures to implement the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage.
“Nepal has made important progress on realizing the human rights of LGBT persons including Supreme Court decisions on citizenship, IDs, and same-sex marriage. However, LGBT people still face marginalization and discrimination,” said Brazil.
Canada welcomed the progress on democratic reform since Nepal’s first UPR and congratulates Nepal on the promulgation of its new constitution. In particular, Canada would like to commend Nepal’s efforts towards ensuring equality of LGBTI persons. Canada recognizes Nepal’s significant efforts to reform its legal framework. We strongly encourage Nepal to consolidate implementation of these measures including through the engagement of all stakeholders.
Similarly, Israel recommended that Nepal strengthen the protection of LGBTI people and works toward the full implementation of current laws.
Deputy Director of Blue Diamond Society Parshuram Rai said it is a very positive that in the UPR meeting Nepal’s constitution has been welcomed and discussions about the rights of gender and sexual minority. He thanked to those countries who raised voices about Nepal’s constitution and rights of gender and sexual minority.
